Overview

The ‘Grassroots Open Government Using New Digital Tools’ Project is intended to enhance communication and information sharing between citizens and the local government in Ellembelle District. The project focuses on public service delivery in the areas of Health, Education and Sanitation.

The Project uses an integrated set of tested tools namely: an interactive online platform which is integrated with Mobile App, SMS, and traditional media such as Public forums, community radio and TV stations in the Ellembelle District.

This platform is to allow concerned citizens have a voice in how resources allocated for development are prudently utilised to eradicate poverty and stimulate wealth creation.

About District

Background

The Ellembelle District is one of the twenty-two (22) districts in the Western Region of Ghana. It was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I)  1918. It is located on the southern part of the region between longitudes 2º05’ W and 2º35’ W  and latitude 4º40N and 5º20N. Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh is the District Chief Executive, and Innocent Haligah is the District Coordinating Director.

The District capital is Nkroful  and shares boundaries with the Jomoro District to the West, Wassa Amenfi West District to the North, Nzema East Municipal to the South – East, Tarkwa – Nsuaem Municipal to the East and a 70 km stretch of sandy beaches to the south.  It covers a total area of about 1,468 square kilometers, which constitutes about 9.8% percent of the total land mass of the Western Region.

The population of the district according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 86,501 with 42,317 males and 45,184 females.

Although Ellembelle is yet to have a district government hospital, it has the second largest hospital in the Western region – St. Martins de Porres Hospital at Eikwe. There are other health centres and CHPs which are concentrated in the southern sector.

It is worthy of note that majority of Teachers in the District are untrained. Of the total number of 895 teachers teaching at all levels in the District, only 34.3% (307) are trained.  65.7% (588) are untrained. Those trained and untrained for primary are 150 and 289. Junior High School, 153 and 124 for trained and untrained respectively.

 The Ellembelle District Assembly exists to ensure the total development of the District through effective management of resources in collaboration with Ministries, Department, Agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations in order to improve the quality of life of the people in the District.
